Workhome Studies – The Workhome in Student Projects

The Covid-19 shift to home-based work has major implications for the design of our buildings and cities. Almost overnight, homes and workplaces, suburbs and Central Business Districts need to be re-imagined and configured to reap the benefits and mitigate the disadvantages of this age-old working practice. Architectural students across the world have been hard at it – spurred on by their tutors. In this ongoing series, we showcase some of the best student work that addresses this paradigm shift head-on, at the scale of the home, the building, the block, the neighbourhood or the city, contextualised by their tutor’s reflections.

RED Futures

Chelsea’s RED (Research Enterprise Design) Studio launched in 2020–2021 during the Covid-19 lockdown by creating a digitised studio of 16 collaborators operating online. RED design students were tasked with reimagining new realities unfolding within the context of the pandemic crisis and by taking an active role in leading and shaping new scenarios.

Nijmegen: Site of Bricolage

The TU Delft Urban Architecture graduation studios are set up on the premise that architecture is a highly contextual field. In this contribution to Workhome Studies, Eireen Schreuers reports from her work with students on the theme of ‘Bricolage’ between 2020–21 – making do with what is at hand, inviting students to interpret, adapt, re-use and juxtapose the existing context, departing from its particular conditions and resources.

The Productive Dwelling

Studio 12 at the University of Brighton led by Luis Diaz and Sean Albuquerque has concentrated on housing since 2010. In 2017 the studio focused on live-work dwellings on a site in Hastings using Frances Hollis’s book Beyond Live/Work as a starting point. In this article, Luis Diaz revisits the studio's work from today’s perspective.

Housing Space Use in the Pandemic and After: The Case for New Design Guidance

UK homes need to be bigger to accommodate home-based work. This is the conclusion of research carried out by the Workhome Project’s Frances Holliss in collaboration with London Metropolitan University’s Matthew Barac and Research Assistants Nicola Blake and Marianna Janowicz.

Two-door City. Workhome Project shortlisted for 2021 Davidson Prize

The theme of the inaugural Davidson Prize for architectural drawing, ‘Home/Work – A New Future’, sought out thought-provoking ideas to help inform the debate about working from home. Our ‘Two-door city’ concept made it on the shortlist.
